About Harlech

Known for

Harlech Castle (UNESCO World Heritage Site, the most dramatically sited castle in Wales), the Royal St David's Golf Club, Cardigan Bay views, and a small Welsh village of extraordinary historical and natural beauty

A little history

Harlech Castle, built by Edward I between 1282 and 1289, sits on a rocky outcrop with sheer cliffs dropping to what was once the sea below. It is one of the finest examples of concentric castle design in the world, and was the last castle in Wales to fall in the Wars of the Roses. The song 'Men of Harlech' commemorates its 1461 siege.

Local tip

The castle at sunset is one of Wales's great views — the Snowdonia and Cardigan Bay panorama is extraordinary. Royal St David's Golf Course runs beneath the castle. The beach at Harlech Sands is magnificent and usually uncrowded.
