Haltwhistle claims to be the geographical centre of Britain — though this claim is disputed. The town sits at the heart of Hadrian's Wall country, with some of the finest sections of the Wall — Housesteads, Vindolanda, Cawfields — within easy reach. The South Tyne railway passes through on its way from Carlisle.
