About Halifax

Known for

The Piece Hall (the most magnificent Georgian cloth trading hall in England), Eureka! The National Children's Museum, the Banksy-inspired street art, the Dean Clough mills, and a West Yorkshire town of remarkable reinvention

A little history

The Piece Hall, built in 1779, is the only surviving Georgian cloth hall in England — its 315 rooms arranged around a vast courtyard where handloom weavers sold their cloth. Halifax grew as a centre of wool and worsted manufacture. The town's post-industrial regeneration, centred on the Piece Hall, has been extraordinary.

Local tip

The Piece Hall is genuinely magnificent — a free Georgian masterpiece restored to its former glory. The rooftop bar has extraordinary views. Eureka! for children. The Dean Clough mills for galleries and independent businesses.
