About Grimsby

Known for

The UK's largest fishing port heritage, the National Fishing Heritage Centre, the Fridge (Europe's largest chilled distribution hub), and a North East Lincolnshire town reinventing itself from its fishing industry past

A little history

Grimsby was once the world's greatest fishing port — in the 1950s and 1960s more fish passed through Grimsby than anywhere on earth. The Cod Wars with Iceland in the 1970s ended the distant water fishing industry. The town has been reinventing itself ever since, now home to the offshore wind energy industry.

Local tip

The National Fishing Heritage Centre is excellent — the story of the Grimsby trawlermen is genuinely moving. The No. 1 Fishing Heritage Centre. The fish market for fresh local seafood. The offshore wind industry transformation.
