A little history

Greenwich was the birthplace of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The Royal Observatory, built by Wren in 1675, established Greenwich as the world's prime meridian in 1884 — setting GMT as global time. The Royal Naval College — Wren's greatest secular building — dominates the riverside. The Cutty Sark, the world's last surviving tea clipper, is preserved here.

Local tip

Stand on the Prime Meridian at the Royal Observatory — straddling time zones is genuinely fun. The Cutty Sark is extraordinary up close. The Royal Naval College is free to walk through. Greenwich Market for independent food. The park for the London skyline view.
