John Mercer — born in Great Harwood — invented the mercerisation process in 1844, which transforms cotton into the lustrous, strong fabric still used worldwide. The Mercer Park and Gallery commemorate this local inventor who changed the textile industry globally. The town grew as a cotton weaving centre.
