The Dunmow Flitch Trials have been held since the 12th century — couples must convince a jury of six maidens and six bachelors that they have not argued or wished themselves unmarried for a year and a day. The winner receives a side of bacon. The trials were the inspiration for the phrase 'bringing home the bacon'.

The Dunmow Flitch Trials, held every four years, are genuinely extraordinary and entertaining. The market town centre has good independent shops. The surrounding Essex countryside for walking.
