About Girvan

Known for

Ailsa Craig (the dramatic volcanic plug visible from Girvan, source of the world's finest curling stones), the Turnberry golf course nearby, the harbour, and a South Ayrshire fishing town with an extraordinary backdrop

A little history

Girvan sits on the Firth of Clyde with Ailsa Craig — the 1,114-foot volcanic plug — dominating the view. The granite from Ailsa Craig makes the world's finest curling stones. Turnberry — one of the world's great golf courses — is just north of the town. The harbour has been fishing since medieval times.

Local tip

The Ailsa Craig view from Girvan harbour is extraordinary — particularly at sunrise or sunset. Boat trips to Ailsa Craig for the gannet colony (100,000 gannets breed here). Turnberry for the golf legacy. The harbour for fresh fish.
