About Gateshead

Known for

The Angel of the North (Antony Gormley's iconic steel sculpture), the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, the Sage Gateshead music venue, the Millennium Bridge, and the artistic twin of Newcastle across the Tyne

A little history

Gateshead's transformation from industrial town to cultural destination is one of England's great regeneration stories. The Angel of the North, erected in 1998, became an instantly beloved national icon. The Baltic — opened in a converted flour mill in 2002 — and the Sage music venue have made the Quayside one of Britain's great cultural destinations.

Local tip

The Angel of the North at dawn or dusk is extraordinary. The Baltic is free and has exceptional contemporary art. The Sage for world-class music. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge (the only tilting bridge in the world) for the Tyne views.
