About Garstang

Known for

The world's first Fairtrade town (declared in 2000, the template for thousands of Fairtrade towns worldwide), the Lancaster Canal, Greenhalgh Castle ruins, and a small Lancashire market town of global ethical significance

A little history

Garstang declared itself the world's first Fairtrade town in April 2000 — a campaign that began in the local church and spread to become a global movement, with over 2,000 Fairtrade towns and communities worldwide following the model. The Lancaster Canal passes through the town. Greenhalgh Castle, a ruined 14th century fortress, sits above the town.

Local tip

The Fairtrade story is celebrated in the town — the movement that changed global trade started here. The Lancaster Canal towpath for walking and cycling. Greenhalgh Castle ruins for history. The Thursday market for local Lancashire produce.
