About Fraserburgh

Known for

The Lighthouse Museum (at Scotland's oldest lighthouse, built in 1787), the fishing heritage (Scotland's busiest white fish port), Kinnaird Head Castle, and a remote Aberdeenshire fishing town of genuine maritime significance

A little history

Fraserburgh was built around the harbour by Alexander Fraser in the 16th century. Kinnaird Head Castle was converted into Scotland's first lighthouse in 1787. The town remains one of Scotland's most important fishing ports — catching and processing white fish on an enormous scale.

Local tip

The Lighthouse Museum in Kinnaird Head Castle is genuinely excellent — Scotland's lighthouse heritage told brilliantly. The harbour for fresh fish. Cairnbulg and Inverallochy for beautiful beaches. The town's fish market for the genuine fishing industry.
