About Fowey

Known for

Daphne du Maurier's home town (Rebecca and Jamaica Inn were written here), the beautiful harbour estuary, the ferry to Bodinnick, the literary connections, and a small Cornwall port of extraordinary beauty

A little history

Daphne du Maurier lived at Menabilly near Fowey for decades — Rebecca was set in the area. The town's harbour, with its tidal estuary and medieval quaysides, is one of Cornwall's most picturesque. Fowey has been an important port since medieval times, exporting Cornish tin and copper.

Local tip

The Bodinnick ferry for the beautiful crossing and the Hall Walk above the estuary. The harbour walk at high tide. The du Maurier Literary Festival in May. Readymoney Cove for a secluded beach.
