About Fort William

Known for

Ben Nevis (Britain's highest mountain, 1,345 metres), the Jacobite steam train (used as the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter), the West Highland Way terminus, and the Outdoor Capital of the UK

A little history

Fort William sits at the foot of Ben Nevis — Britain's highest mountain. The town was established as a garrison after the Jacobite risings. The Jacobite steam train running from Fort William to Mallaig crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct — the most photographed railway location in the world since Harry Potter.

Local tip

The Jacobite steam train is genuinely extraordinary — book well in advance. Ben Nevis for the summit (allow 7-9 hours). The West Highland Way arrives here after 96 miles. The Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge is moving.
