About Fort Augustus

Known for

The Caledonian Canal locks (a spectacular flight of five locks lifting boats from Loch Ness), Loch Ness itself, Invergarry Castle ruins, and a small Highland village at the heart of the Great Glen

A little history

Fort Augustus was built as a military garrison after the 1715 Jacobite rising. The Caledonian Canal, designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1822, passes through the village — the five-lock flight is one of the most dramatic engineering sights in Scotland. Loch Ness begins here.

Local tip

The five-lock flight on the Caledonian Canal is extraordinary to watch — boats going up and down through the village. The Loch Ness shoreline walk for monster-spotting. Invergarry Castle ruins for the dramatic riverside setting.
