About Fleet

Known for

Fleet Pond (Hampshire's largest freshwater lake and nature reserve), the Basingstoke Canal, and an affluent Hampshire commuter town with excellent access to both London and the Surrey Hills

A little history

Fleet developed primarily as a commuter town when the railway arrived in 1847. Fleet Pond — a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Local Nature Reserve — is the largest natural freshwater lake in Hampshire, with extraordinary birdlife year-round. The Basingstoke Canal runs through the area.

Local tip

Fleet Pond is genuinely excellent for birdwatching — reed warblers, great crested grebes and kingfishers all nest here. The Basingstoke Canal towpath for walking and cycling. The town centre has improving independent food.
