About Fakenham

Known for

The Fakenham Racecourse (one of England's most rural and characterful small racecourses), the Gas Museum (the only surviving Victorian town gas works open to the public), the Thursday market, and a north Norfolk market town of genuine character

A little history

Fakenham's gas works, built in 1846, is the only surviving example in England where the complete 19th century gas-making process is preserved and open to the public. The racecourse, founded in 1905, is one of the most charming small jump racing venues in England.

Local tip

The Gas Museum is genuinely fascinating and free. The Thursday market for local Norfolk produce. The racecourse on race days for an authentic country racing experience.
