A little history

Epsom Salts — magnesium sulphate — were discovered in a spring on Epsom Common in 1618 and became a fashionable medicinal treatment. The Derby, first run in 1780 and named after the 12th Earl of Derby, is the most prestigious flat race in the world. The racecourse on Epsom Downs hosts it every June.

Local tip

Derby Day at Epsom Downs is one of England's great sporting and social spectacles — the Downs are free to watch from. The town centre for good independent shops. The North Downs walking from Epsom.
