About Enniskillen

Known for

Enniskillen Castle (with the Inniskillings Museum), the Fermanagh Lakelands (the finest lake district in Ireland), the Remembrance Day bombing of 1987, Oscar Wilde's school (Portora Royal School), and the county town of Fermanagh

A little history

Enniskillen Castle — built on an island in the River Erne — is one of the finest surviving plantation castles in Ireland. Oscar Wilde attended Portora Royal School here. The Enniskillen bombing on Remembrance Day 1987 killed 12 people and became one of the most tragic events of the Troubles.

Local tip

Enniskillen Castle and the Inniskillings Museum are genuinely excellent. The Fermanagh Lakelands boat trips on Lough Erne — the ancient monastic island of Devenish is unmissable. The town centre has good independent shops.
