About Ebbw Vale

Known for

Aneurin Bevan's constituency (the father of the NHS represented Ebbw Vale), the Festival Park (built on the steelworks site), Warm Wales and the post-industrial regeneration, and a South Wales valleys town of profound political significance

A little history

Aneurin Bevan — who created the National Health Service in 1948, the greatest achievement of post-war British politics — was born in nearby Tredegar and represented Ebbw Vale from 1929 until his death in 1960. The steelworks that defined the town closed in 2002. The Festival Park and regeneration have transformed the site.

Local tip

The Aneurin Bevan memorial stones at Waun-y-Pound — three enormous standing stones commemorating Nye Bevan — are extraordinary. The Festival Park for shopping. The Ebbw Vale Heritage Walk for the steelworks story.
