About East Kilbride

Known for

Scotland's first new town (1947), the National Museum of Rural Life, Hunter House (birthplace of the Hunter brothers who made vital contributions to medicine), and South Lanarkshire's largest town

A little history

East Kilbride was Scotland's first designated New Town in 1947 — built to rehouse Glasgow overspill. The town centre was designed with a network of pedestrianised streets. Hunter House was the birthplace of John and William Hunter, the 18th century physicians who transformed surgery and anatomy.

Local tip

The National Museum of Rural Life is excellent — farm and country life in Scotland through the centuries. Hunter House for the remarkable medical history. The town centre shopping is extensive. Calderglen Country Park for walking.
