About Dromore

Known for

The Dromore Mound (a Norman motte, one of County Down's finest), Bishop Jeremy Taylor's connection (the brilliant 17th century churchman was Bishop here), the River Lagan, and a County Down market town of historic ecclesiastical significance

A little history

Dromore was an important episcopal centre — Bishop Jeremy Taylor, one of the greatest prose writers in the English language, was Bishop of Down and Connor and Dromore from 1661 until his death in 1667. The cathedral dates from this period. The Norman motte is one of the finest in County Down.

Local tip

The Norman motte is free and gives good views. The Cathedral for the Bishop Taylor connection. The Lagan towpath for walking. The town centre market for local produce.
