A little history

St Patrick is reputed to be buried beneath the granite slab in the churchyard of Down Cathedral — making Downpatrick one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in Ireland. The Cathedral itself is one of Ireland's finest. The Down County Museum occupies the historic County Gaol.

Local tip

Down Cathedral and St Patrick's grave are genuinely moving — one of Ireland's most important Christian sites. The Down County Museum is free and excellent. The Irish Linen Centre is good. The Mourne Mountains are 20 minutes away.
