About Dolgellau

Known for

The Mawddach Estuary (one of Britain's most beautiful), Cader Idris (the brooding mountain above the town), the gold rush heritage, the Quaker heritage, and a small Welsh-speaking Gwynedd town of extraordinary natural setting

A little history

Dolgellau was the centre of a Victorian gold rush — Welsh gold from the Dolgellau gold belt has been used in royal wedding rings since 1923. The town has a significant Quaker heritage — many Quakers emigrated from here to Pennsylvania in the 1680s. Cader Idris, rising dramatically above the town, is one of Wales's finest mountains.

Local tip

The Mawddach Trail cycling from Dolgellau to Barmouth is one of Wales's great rides. Cader Idris for the finest mountain walk in southern Snowdonia. The town square market for Welsh produce. T.H. Roberts ironmonger (unchanged since Victorian times) is extraordinary.
