A little history

Devizes grew around a Norman castle at the junction of important routes. The Kennet and Avon Canal's Caen Hill flight of 29 locks, completed in 1810, was one of the great engineering achievements of the canal age. The Wiltshire Museum holds extraordinary finds from Avebury and Stonehenge.

Local tip

The Caen Hill flight of locks is genuinely spectacular — walk the towpath alongside the 29 locks. The Wiltshire Museum is free and extraordinary — the prehistoric gold and artefacts are outstanding. The Thursday market for local produce.
