About Deptford

Known for

The Royal Dockyard (where Drake, Raleigh and the Great Britain were fitted out), the Deptford Market Yard, the arts scene, Christopher Marlowe's murder site, and a rapidly gentrifying South East London neighbourhood with deep maritime heritage

A little history

Deptford Royal Dockyard was founded by Henry VIII in 1513 — Francis Drake was knighted here by Elizabeth I in 1581 after circumnavigating the globe. Christopher Marlowe, the playwright, was murdered in a Deptford tavern in 1593. The dockyard closed in 1869 and the area has been transforming ever since.

Local tip

Deptford Market Yard is excellent for independent food and vintage on weekends. The Church of St Paul for Marlowe's memorial. The Albany theatre for independent productions. The Creekside area for arts studios.
