A little history

Deal was one of the most important ports in medieval England — Henry VIII built three castles here including the magnificent rose-shaped Deal Castle in 1539-40. The Duke of Wellington died at Walmer Castle in 1852. The town has become celebrated for its independent high street, which has attracted artists and food lovers.

Local tip

Deal Castle is one of England's best preserved Tudor artillery forts — extraordinary rose-shaped design. Walmer Castle (Wellington's death chamber preserved) is excellent. The High Street for exceptional independent shops and cafes. The seafront at sunset.
