About Darwen

Known for

The Darwen Tower (Jubilee Tower) on Darwen Moor, the India Mill chimney (tallest in Lancashire, styled as an Italian campanile), the battle for moorland access, and a Lancashire mill town with extraordinary industrial skyline

A little history

In the 1870s, Darwen workers fought a landmark legal battle to win access to Darwen Moor — one of the first victories in the public's right to roam. The Jubilee Tower was built in 1898 to celebrate the access victory. The India Mill chimney, 303 feet tall and built to resemble an Italian campanile, is Lancashire's most extraordinary industrial monument.

Local tip

Walk up to the Jubilee Tower on Darwen Moor for panoramic Lancashire views — the moorland is beautiful. The India Mill chimney is best appreciated from the valley below. Sunnyhurst Hey Wood for peaceful walking.
