About Cullompton

Known for

St Andrew's Church (one of Devon's finest Perpendicular Gothic churches), the M5 motorway junction, the Walrond Aisle (the finest example of fan vaulting in Devon), and a Mid Devon market town on the main route to the South West

A little history

Cullompton grew wealthy from the wool trade — St Andrew's Church, built in the 15th century, reflects that prosperity with its magnificent Perpendicular tower and extraordinary Walrond Aisle fan vaulting. The town sits on the main Roman road from London to Exeter (now the M5), making it an important staging post.

Local tip

St Andrew's Church is genuinely magnificent and free — the Walrond Aisle fan vaulting is extraordinary. The town centre for local Mid Devon shopping. The Culm Valley walking. The Thursday market for local produce.
