A little history

Crowthorne exists largely because of its two great institutions — Wellington College, founded as a memorial to the Duke of Wellington in 1859, and Broadmoor Hospital, opened in 1863 as the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. The village grew to serve these institutions. Swinley Forest is one of the finest cycle and walking forests in Berkshire.

Local tip

Swinley Forest for mountain biking and walking — one of the best forest ride networks in the South East. Wellington College is architecturally impressive. The village has good independent cafes.
