Known for

Arthur Conan Doyle's home (he lived here for 23 years and is buried in the churchyard), Ashdown Forest (the inspiration for Winnie the Pooh's Hundred Acre Wood), and a High Weald market town of real literary significance

A little history

Arthur Conan Doyle moved to Windlesham Manor in Crowborough in 1907 and lived there until his death in 1930. Ashdown Forest — the largest area of open land in the South East — inspired A.A. Milne's Hundred Acre Wood. Christopher Robin Milne and his father walked the forest extensively.

Local tip

The Conan Doyle connection is marked locally — he's buried in the churchyard. Ashdown Forest for the Pooh Sticks bridge (follow the signs from Chuck Hatch). The High Weald walking. The town has good independent shops.
