About Crossford

Known for

Craignethan Castle (the model for Tillietudlem in Walter Scott's Old Mortality), the Clyde Valley orchards, the Clyde walking trail, and a small Lanarkshire village in one of Scotland's finest river valleys

A little history

Craignethan Castle, built by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart in the 1530s, is one of the most sophisticated fortified houses in Scotland. Walter Scott used it as the model for Tillietudlem Castle in Old Mortality. The Clyde Valley is famous for its orchards — particularly strawberries and other soft fruit.

Local tip

Craignethan Castle is extraordinary and rarely visited — a hidden Scottish gem. The Clyde Valley orchards in summer for fresh fruit. The Clyde walking trail through the valley.
