The former steelworks whose steel built the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Harbour Bridge, the C2C cycle route finish, and a Durham market town that survived deindustrialisation

A little history

Consett's steelworks were among the largest in the world. The steel made here was used in the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The closure in 1980 devastated the town.

Local tip

The C2C cycle route ends here — cyclists from Whitehaven arrive daily in summer. The old steelworks site has been transformed.
