About Comber

Known for

Comber potatoes (famous throughout Northern Ireland), Castle Espie Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Strangford Lough, and a County Down market town serving the fertile Ards Peninsula hinterland

A little history

Comber is famous for its early potatoes — the Comber Earlies, with Protected Geographical Indication status, are grown in the unique coastal soils around Strangford Lough and are among the most celebrated early potatoes in Ireland. Castle Espie is one of the most important wildfowl centres in Ireland.

Local tip

Comber Earlies in season (June) from local farm shops are genuinely extraordinary — treat them simply with butter. Castle Espie for birdwatching — extraordinary numbers of waders and wildfowl. The town square for the local market.
