A little history

Britain's oldest recorded town. Camulodunum was the first Roman capital of Britain. Boadicea burned it to the ground in 60 AD. The Norman castle is built on the foundations of the Roman temple of Claudius — the largest castle keep in Europe.

Local tip

The Castle Museum is one of England's finest Roman collections. The Dutch Quarter (Flemish weavers settled here in Elizabeth I's time) for independent food. Colchester Natural History Museum is free.
