Known for

Wordsworth's birthplace, Jennings Brewery, the confluence of the Cocker and Derwent, and a beautiful Cumbrian market town at the western Lake District edge

A little history

William Wordsworth was born on Main Street in 1770. Jennings Brewery has brewed here since 1828. The town was badly flooded in 2009 but recovered with remarkable community spirit.

Local tip

Wordsworth House is beautifully preserved — genuinely excellent. Jennings Brewery tours. The Main Street is one of Cumbria's finest.
