About Cockermouth

Known for

Wordsworth's birthplace (the handsome Georgian house is now a museum), the confluence of the Cocker and Derwent rivers, Jennings Brewery, and a beautiful Cumbrian market town at the western edge of the Lake District

A little history

William Wordsworth was born in the handsome Georgian house on Main Street in 1770 — now one of the National Trust's most visited properties. Jennings Brewery has brewed here since 1828, using water from the River Cocker. The town was badly flooded in 2009 but has recovered with remarkable community spirit.

Local tip

Wordsworth House is genuinely excellent — beautifully preserved with period furnishings. Jennings Brewery tours for the Cumbrian ale tradition. The Main Street is one of Cumbria's finest. The Whinlatter Forest Park is a short drive.
