About Cleckheaton

Known for

The Heavy Woollen District textile heritage, the Whitcliffe Mount School (alma mater of several notable Yorkshiremen), and a West Yorkshire mill town between Bradford and Dewsbury

A little history

Cleckheaton grew as a textile manufacturing town in the Heavy Woollen District — producing shoddy and mungo cloth alongside the neighbouring towns of Batley, Heckmondwike and Brighouse. The town's mills have largely closed but the Victorian architecture of the industrial era remains.

Local tip

The town centre for local West Yorkshire shopping. The Heavy Woollen District heritage trail connects Cleckheaton to the wider area. Oakwell Hall at nearby Birstall for the Brontë connection.
