About Chorley

Known for

The flat iron market (one of England's oldest), the birthplace of Henry Tate (of the Tate galleries), Astley Hall, and a Lancashire market town that genuinely still functions as one

A little history

Henry Tate — who made his fortune in sugar refining and founded the Tate Gallery with his collection — was born in Chorley in 1819. Astley Hall, a remarkable Elizabethan and Jacobean house, survived intact with extraordinary interiors. The flat iron market has been trading on Tuesdays since the medieval period.

Local tip

The Tuesday flat iron market is one of Lancashire's great traditional markets. Astley Hall is free and extraordinary — the plasterwork ceilings and shuffleboard table are remarkable. The town centre for genuine Lancashire shopping.
