A little history

Chester-le-Street was the site of a Roman fort (Concangis) and later a significant early Christian settlement — the body of St Cuthbert rested here for over 100 years before being taken to Durham. Lumley Castle, built in the 1390s, dominates the town. Durham County Cricket Club plays at the Riverside ground here.

Local tip

Lumley Castle is worth visiting — afternoon tea in a medieval castle is quite something. The Riverside ground for Durham cricket in summer. The riverside walk along the Wear. The church for the extraordinary Anker's House and medieval monuments.
