A little history

Chepstow Castle was begun in 1067 — the year after the Norman Conquest — making it the oldest surviving stone castle in Britain. The town sits at the point where the River Wye meets the Severn, making it a strategic border crossing. The Wye Valley, with Tintern Abbey and the Offa's Dyke Path, begins at Chepstow.

Local tip

The castle is extraordinary and often less crowded than its significance deserves. The Wye Valley walk from Chepstow to Tintern Abbey (5 miles) is one of Wales's great walks. The town centre for good independent shopping. The bridge views of the Wye gorge.
