About Cheddar

Known for

The Cheddar Gorge (England's largest gorge), Cheddar cheese (the world's most copied cheese, made here since the 12th century), Gough's Cave (with the 9,000-year-old Cheddar Man), and a Somerset village of world-famous natural and culinary significance

A little history

Cheddar Gorge was carved by meltwater at the end of the last Ice Age. Gough's Cave contains the skeleton of Cheddar Man — Britain's oldest complete human skeleton at 9,000 years old. Cheddar cheese has been made in the caves and surrounding area since at least the 12th century — the cool, constant temperature being ideal for maturation.

Local tip

The Gorge is best walked early morning before the tourist traffic. The Cox's Cave for stalactites. Buy genuine Cheddar cheese from the farm shops — the real thing is extraordinary. The cliff walks above the gorge for the best views.
