About Chatham

Known for

The Historic Dockyard Chatham (one of Britain's finest maritime heritage sites), HMS Victory was built here, Charles Dickens's boyhood home, the Royal Engineers Museum, and a Medway town of extraordinary naval and literary heritage

A little history

Chatham Dockyard was one of the most important naval dockyards in the world for 400 years — HMS Victory (Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar) was built here. Charles Dickens spent his formative years in Chatham, describing it vividly in his novels. The dockyard closed in 1984 and is now a remarkable heritage site.

Local tip

The Historic Dockyard is genuinely world-class — the Victorian ropery, the submarines, and the wooden warships are extraordinary. The Dickens World attraction is nearby. The Medway waterfront is improving rapidly.
