About Castlerock

Known for

The Mussenden Temple (the spectacular clifftop rotunda on the Causeway Coastal Route), Downhill Demesne, the beach, and a small County Londonderry coastal village of extraordinary natural and architectural beauty

A little history

The Mussenden Temple — built in 1785 by the eccentric Earl Bishop of Derry as a library — perches dramatically on a 120-foot cliff above the sea. Downhill Demesne, the bishop's pleasure grounds, now managed by the National Trust, surrounds it. The village has a lovely sandy beach.

Local tip

The Mussenden Temple at sunset is one of Ireland's great views — absolutely extraordinary. Downhill beach below the cliffs is excellent and rarely crowded. The National Trust grounds for walking.
