About Castle Douglas

Known for

Scotland's Food Town (a self-declared title that's largely justified), Threave Castle (NTS, on an island in the Dee), the Galloway countryside, and a Dumfriesshire market town with an extraordinary food culture

A little history

Castle Douglas was founded in 1792 by William Douglas, a merchant who had made his fortune in Virginia. The town declared itself Scotland's Food Town in 1995 and has built an impressive independent food culture around that identity. Threave Castle — a 14th century tower house on an island in the River Dee — is nearby.

Local tip

The independent food shops on King Street are excellent — genuine artisan producers. Threave Castle is accessible by rowing boat (rung a bell on the bank) and is magnificent. The Galloway countryside for cycling and walking.
