About Castle Cary

Known for

The Glastonbury Festival gateway (the nearest station to Worthy Farm), the round house lock-up (one of England's most unusual village lock-ups), local food and market culture, and a small Somerset market town of great charm

A little history

Castle Cary is the nearest railway station to the Glastonbury Festival site — every June the town is transformed as festival-goers pass through. The barrel-shaped lock-up on the market square dates from 1779 and is one of the most photographed village curiosities in Somerset. The town has been a market centre for south Somerset since medieval times.

Local tip

The round house lock-up in the market square is extraordinary. The George Hotel is a lovely Somerset coaching inn. The Friday market for local produce. In Glastonbury Festival week the town is lively beyond all recognition.
