About Carnforth

Known for

Brief Encounter (the 1945 David Lean film was shot entirely at Carnforth Station), the working steam engines at Steamtown, Leighton Moss RSPB reserve, and a small Lancashire town with a surprisingly romantic cinematic heritage

A little history

Carnforth Station was chosen for David Lean's Brief Encounter in 1945 because it was far enough from London to escape WWII blackout restrictions. The station's refreshment room and clock became the most romantic film set in British cinema history. The station has been beautifully restored as a Brief Encounter visitor centre.

Local tip

The Brief Encounter Refreshment Room at Carnforth Station is genuinely charming — the original setting perfectly preserved. Leighton Moss RSPB reserve is one of England's finest — bitterns boom here in spring. The Lancaster Canal for walking.
