About Carmarthen

Known for

The oldest town in Wales (Roman Moridunum), Merlin's birthplace (according to legend), the Roman amphitheatre, the cattle market (one of Wales's most important), and the county town of Carmarthenshire

A little history

Carmarthen — Caerfyrddin in Welsh — is traditionally regarded as the oldest town in Wales, built on the Roman settlement of Moridunum. According to legend, Merlin the wizard was born here — Myrddin in Welsh, from which both Merlin and Carmarthen take their names. The Roman amphitheatre is one of only seven surviving in Wales.

Local tip

The Roman amphitheatre is free and surprisingly well preserved — one of the least-visited Roman sites in Wales. The Wednesday and Saturday markets for Welsh produce. The Coracle Centre at nearby Cenarth for the traditional Welsh fishing boat.
