About Carlisle

Known for

Carlisle Castle (one of England's most fought-over fortresses), Hadrian's Wall gateway, the Cathedral, Tullie House Museum, and England's most northerly city — the Gateway to Scotland

A little history

Carlisle has been fought over by England and Scotland more than any other city — changing hands 13 times. The castle, begun by William Rufus in 1092, saw Mary Queen of Scots imprisoned here in 1568. The city is at the western end of Hadrian's Wall. Carlisle's cursing stone is inscribed with a 1,069-word curse from 1525.

Local tip

Carlisle Castle is magnificent — the castle and the Border Regiment Museum are excellent. Tullie House Museum for the Roman and Border history. The Cathedral for the painted ceiling. The Cursing Stone in the underpass is worth finding.
