About Cardigan

Known for

The first eisteddfod (held at Cardigan Castle in 1176), the Teifi estuary, the Welsh Language heartland, Cardigan Castle (beautifully restored), and a small Welsh market town of genuine cultural and historical significance

A little history

Cardigan Castle was the site of the first recorded National Eisteddfod in 1176, held by the Lord Rhys — making Cardigan the birthplace of Wales's greatest cultural tradition. The castle has been beautifully restored and reopened. The Teifi estuary and the Pembrokeshire Coast nearby make it an extraordinary natural setting.

Local tip

Cardigan Castle is excellent — the restoration is superb and the history of the eisteddfod is told brilliantly. The Teifi Marshes nature reserve for birdwatching. The market on Mondays and Saturdays. The Mwldan Theatre for arts events.
