About Canterbury

Known for

Canterbury Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site, seat of the Archbishop of England), the Chaucer connection (Canterbury Tales), the medieval city walls, and England's most important pilgrimage destination for 800 years

A little history

Canterbury has been the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury — the head of the Church of England — since Augustine arrived in 597 AD. Thomas Becket was murdered in the cathedral in 1170, making it one of medieval Europe's most important pilgrimage sites. Chaucer's Canterbury Tales immortalised the pilgrimage route from London.

Local tip

The cathedral is genuinely magnificent — the site of Becket's murder is powerfully atmospheric. The medieval city walls are walkable for free. The Westgate Towers for the best city view. Avoid the peak tourist season if possible — the city is much more enjoyable early morning.
